A beautiful and early example of Hans Wegner’s classic Cigar chair that was produced in the 1950’s by Getama. This early version is in solid beech and was quite likely to have been commissioned and retailed by Illums Bolighus in Copenhagen as distinct from Getama’s more usual teak and oak range. The native beech is a lovely pale golden colour with subtle grain and figure. The chair has a single letter ‘A’ stamped under one arm. We have seen these letter stamps on early Wegner chairs before and they are probably reference marks for the final check of the finished chair by a cabinet maker. This chair has its original sprung cushions which have been re-upholstered in Mist by Mourne Textiles, a wool fabric created by Gerd Hay-Edie and used by designer Robin Day for Hille in 1951. The original link spring base has been re-covered with a black cloth.
