In 1960 Sir Basil Spence commissioned Dick Russell (Gordon Russells brother) to design a chair for Coventry Cathedral. Produced in finely grained English oak 2000 chairs were made for the Cathedral to a design that allowed six chairs to be joined together into a row by passing a metal rod through a hole in the sides. They are also stackable and can be used singly as well as joined together. There is a brass stud on the back to hang a kneeler and a prayer book shelf on the back. The exposed finger joints are not only strong for chairs that received a lot odf use but also reveal Gordon Russell Ltd’s traditional cabinetry rooted in the Arts & Crafts and Cotswold movements.
We also have a superb Gordon Russell desk in English oak with similar joint details.
