The Eastside seating range was the result of a collaboration between Italian design consultancy Sottsass Associati and Knoll international in 1987. Ettore Sotsass was a leading Italian postmodernist who worked in many fields throughout a long and revered career. In terms of furniture design he is perhaps best known as the founder of the Memphis Group in 1980 and his partnership with Knoll.
Importantly this pair of Eastside chairs are in excellent original condition. The parchment and green leather upholstery is an integral element of the original design. The contrasting blocks of colour work together with the clean geometric lines and enamelled steel legs and frame to create a piece thoroughly of its time, or even ahead of it. Sottsass drew inspiration from elements of Biedermeier design of the early 19th Century subverting that movements simple clean lines and contrasting forms (such as the use of angular lines with cylindrical bolster in his design) and creating something fresh.
